Medical School Electives

Third-year electives

  • PATH 630. Pathology. Anatomic Elective. Students are introduced to autopsy, cytopathology and surgical pathology. Available August through May.
  • PATH 631. Pathology. Clinical Elective. Students develop a working knowledge of how the clinical laboratory functions in providing results and the interpretation of results in clinical practice. Available August through May.

Fourth-year electives

  • PATH 651. Pathology, Anatomic. This elective is for students with an interest in anatomic pathology. The student will be introduced to the various disciplines in anatomic pathology, including autopsy, cytopathology and surgical pathology subspecialties. The student will learn the gross and microscopic pathology of surgical specimens and assist in performing an autopsy, including a review of history, examination of microscopic sections, and correlation of the pathologic findings with the clinical picture. This learning experience will be enhanced by attendance at conferences, where the student will review as well as present interesting and unusual material. The student will be expected to complete all assignments for the month, including glass slide and digital image case studies, autopsy presentations, and review of pertinent and current literature. Available August through May.
  • PATH 652. Pathology, Clinical. An elective designed to introduce the student to the practice of Clinical Pathology through weekly rotations through each section of the clinical laboratory including chemistry, transfusion medicine (blood bank), coagulation, microbiology, and hematopathology. The student will develop a working knowledge of how the laboratory functions in providing laboratory results, and the interpretation of results in clinical practice. Available August through May.
